Join the CMC community in Santa Barbara for an evening discussion with Hilary Appel, the Podlich Family Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow as she discusses the current state of US-Russian relations.

Many in Russia thought the election of Donald Trump as US President could help improve the antagonistic relationship between Moscow and Washington. However, US-Russian relations reached a new low point in 2018, with accusations of cyberattacks and election meddling, repeated rounds of sanctions and counter-sanctions, new expulsions of diplomats, major military exercises in northern Europe, and the recent announcement of a US withdrawal from the intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty. The relationship has deteriorated so much that some now characterize it as a second Cold War between Russia and the West. Professor Hilary Appel will discuss the state of US-Russian relations and examine the reasons behind the current crisis from both the American and the Russian perspective.

Drinks and appetizers will be provided.
