Join the Bay Area Chapter for an evening in San Francisco with Professor Piercarlo Valdesolo, associate professor of psychology and director of CMC's Moral Emotions and Trust Lab, as he discusses "Awe and Outrage: Emotions That Open and Close Minds."

Awe and outrage are powerful emotions, triggered when we encounter information that violates our expectations of the way we believe the world is, or the way that we believe it ought to be. Though these emotions share a similar cause, their consequences on behavior diverge dramatically. Awe opens our minds, evoking humility, curiosity and a motivation to acquire new knowledge. Outrage shuts these processes down, reinforcing existing viewpoints, increasing moral conviction and motivating derogation of those with whom we disagree. This talk will present the science explaining the causes and consequences of awe and outrage, and then consider their effects in contemporary social and political discourse.

Professor Valdesolo's research particularly focuses on the role of emotions in our moral lives and has been featured in news outlets such as the New York Times, The Atlantic, and NPR's Talk of the Nation.
