A CMC-student produced video won the national QuestBridge Spirit Day Award. The annual contest challenges students from colleges and universities across the nation—such as USC, Penn, and Northwestern—to show what the QuestBridge scholarship program means to them.

CMC professors are helping to shape virtual learning for a memorable, collaborative academic experience. Faculty describe first-hand how they are delivering exceptional coursework in a fully online modality for the spring semester.

Raj Chetty, Harvard University economics professor, opened the spring Athenaeum season with his talk, “Where Opportunity Happens: How Neighborhoods Affect Social Mobility.” Chetty shows how a residential zip code—where a child grows up—is more predictive of economic fate than any other national metric.

She speaks three languages, is the president of the Black Student Association, and vice president of the International Relations Society. With a strong interest in water accessibility issues, she spent two semesters studying in Cuba and Jordan. Meet JaDa Johnson ’21!

Prof. Minxin Pei delivered the prestigious Seymour Martin Lipset Lecture on Democracy in the World. He said, “I think it’s a bet worth making that China’s rendezvous with its democratic future will be delayed, but not prevented.”

Robert L. Emett ’50, a member of the first four-year class of 1950 and a life trustee of Claremont McKenna College, died in December at age 93. Emett was one of CMC’s most generous benefactors, funding a scholarship, a loan fund, and the renovation of the student union.

The CMS Swimming and Diving teams capped off a successful 2020 by earning Scholar All-America Team honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America with team GPAs over 3.6 during the fall semester.

Thank you to the more than 3,000 alumni, parents, and friends who supported the College in 2020. Although it was a difficult year, your support helped CMC provide a robust and immersive virtual learning experience for all of our students.
