James Kreines, the Edward S. Gould Professor of Philosophy, was awarded a 2026 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowship grant to pursue his project, “Nothing Halfway: German Idealism from System-Critique to Hegel’s System, and Back.” Focusing on late 18th- and early 19th-century German philosophy—from Immanuel Kant to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel—Kreines’ research explores contrasting modes of philosophy and divergent viewpoints, creating a “productive friction” that reveals how this period and its thinkers opened new possibilities for their era, for what followed, and for today.
