Montana Gov. Steve Bullock ’88 has announced he is running for President.
Now in his second term, Bullock was first elected governor of the Republican-leaning state in 2012. He won re-election in the year President Donald Trump won the state by 20 points. Bullock previously served two terms as Montana’s attorney general.
Bullock is the 22nd candidate to enter the Democratic presidential race. In a video released this morning, Bullock said he was committed to fighting for campaign finance reform and highlighted his pragmatic approach to governing.
The Helena, Montana, native majored in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics while at CMC, and graduated from Columbia Law School in 1994.
“Even when he was an undergraduate, it was clear that he was headed for great things. He was principled and practical, able to work with people from all backgrounds,” said Jack Pitney, Roy P. Crocker Professor of American Politics. Pitney was the reader for Bullock’s thesis on welfare reform in Montana and has written about his presidential prospects. He also joked that Bullock took his American Presidency class in the spring of 1987.
