2016-17 Academic Year Exam and Break Overview
By Heidi Friedlander P'19

Now that the students are back in Claremont for the fall semester, it is time to start making travel plans for upcoming breaks! The academic calendar and the residence hall opening and closing dates are helpful in planning your student’s travel.

Fall Break: Residence halls and apartments stay open for October 17 and 18. This is a common time for local travel to the homes of friends, outings around the L.A. area, and CMC-sponsored Outdoor Initiatives/College Programming Board (CPB) adventures! Encourage your student to make plans with friends and to be on the lookout for information on Outdoor Initiatives and CPB programming. It might be worth exploring Zipcar for your student’s travel needs.

Thanksgiving Break: No classes will be held on Thursday, November 24, or Friday, November 25, for Thanksgiving recess. Some professors, however, cancel classes earlier in that week, allowing for a longer break, so encourage your students to check with their professors before making travel plans. Keep in mind that residence halls and apartments remain open during Thanksgiving Break and some students remain on campus. Limited campus dining is available; students also plan their own special gatherings over the holiday weekend. Keep in mind that classes resume first thing on Monday, November 28.

Winter Break: Residence halls close on Saturday, December 17, at noon. Refer to the final exam schedule and work with your student to determine when s/he will be able to leave campus. Before making travel plans, ask students to confirm exam schedules with professors in case an exam time slot is moved or an exam is replaced with a written assignment. Note that no campus dining is available over Winter Break.

Residence Halls re-open on Sunday, January 15, 2017, with check in available at Story House from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 16. It will be necessary to make prior arrangements with the Dean of Residential Life for arrivals outside of these timeframes. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 17.

Spring Break: Classes end after Friday, March 10, 2017, and resume on Monday, March 20, 2017. Again, plans for Spring Break vary widely, with students participating in CMC-sponsored trips, travelling with friends, staying on campus, or heading home to recharge. Spring athletics often hold practices during this time. Residence halls will remain open with food services available.

CMC also observes Cesar Chavez Day on Friday, March 31, 2017. No classes will be held but residence halls and dining services remain open.

Summer Break: Finally (it will be here before we know it!), residence halls and apartments close on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at noon. All students, including seniors, must be out of their rooms and apartments by this time. Again, it is wise for your student to confirm his/her final exam schedule before making travel arrangements.
