Frankenstein and the #EpicFail
The concept of failure permeates the novel Frankenstein and is likewise featured prominently in the life of author Mary Shelley. In this talk, Professor Crockett will demonstrate that it is Victor’s inability to accept failure - his refusal to ask for help or to connect with others - that leads to the ultimate #EpicFail in the novel (*spoiler alert!*): the death of everyone he holds dear and the destruction of his self-made monster. Mary Shelley, too, faced failure, and yet she responded to unimaginable loss and hardship by producing one of the most influential narratives of her - and our - time. Failure is part of the human experience; no wonder, then, that representations of failure show up repeatedly in Frankenstein, a novel about - among other things - what it means to be human. The novel reminds us that we must strive to learn strategies to productively respond to failure; we must aspire not to be Victor but, instead, to be Mary Shelley.

New CMCers, this is your chance to have some of your questions answered and connect with new friends before you set foot on campus. We look forward to meeting you!
