As an F-1 student, it is your responsibility to maintain lawful immigration status while studying in the U.S. The Designated School Officials (DSOs) at the Office of International Student Services are here to support you in understanding and complying with the immigration regulations that apply to your student status.
1. Full-Time Enrollment
F-1 students must be enrolled full-time during the fall and spring semesters unless they have received prior authorization for a reduced course load from a DSO.
2. Valid Passport
Your passport must remain valid at all times while in the U.S.
To renew your passport, contact your home country’s embassy or consulate in the U.S.
Passport validity is essential for travel and for maintaining your visa status.
3. Travel Signature (I-20, Page 2)
You must have a valid travel signature to re-enter the U.S. after international travel.
The signature is located on page 2 of your I-20.
It must be less than 1 year old at the time of re-entry (or less than 6 months for students on OPT).
You can reuse a valid travel signature for multiple trips.
Contact your DSO in advance of travel to obtain or renew a travel signature if needed.
4. U.S. Address Reporting
You are required to report any change of U.S. address to your international student advisor within 10 days of the change.
This includes changes from on-campus to off-campus housing, or between off-campus residences.
This ensures your SEVIS record remains up to date.
5. Completion of Academic Program
You are expected to complete your program by the end date listed on your I-20.
After program completion, you may remain in the U.S. for up to 60 days to prepare to depart, apply for post-completion OPT, or transfer to another U.S. school.
Contact International Student Services before your program end date if:
You need more time to finish your degree
You plan to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT)
You intend to transfer to another U.S. institution
6. I-94 Arrival/Departure Record
Check your I-94 record each time you return to the U.S.:
Visit: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov to print out your record to carry with you at all times
Make sure your arrival and departure information is accurate
You’ll need your I-94 when:
Applying for a Social Security Number
Applying for a California Driver’s License
Providing documentation to your DSO
